A Springtime Spectacle in the Terraced Fields of Shunan
From mid-April to late May, the rice terraces of Shikanoji Village in Shunan City transform into a vibrant sea of color during the Uonuma Moss Phlox Festival. Known locally as shibazakura, these moss pinks blanket the hillsides in bright shades of pink, red, and white, drawing thousands of visitors to witness this breathtaking floral landscape.
This unique initiative not only beautifies the region but also supports local agriculture. Moss phlox are planted over weed-control sheets laid across the terraced fields, creating a stunning natural display while preserving the land.
Festival Highlights
Over 200,000 moss phlox blooms stretch across the hillside, creating a vibrant quilt-like pattern that’s especially captivating in full bloom.
A dedicated observation deck offers panoramic views, perfect for photography and relaxation.
This is a community-supported project maintained by local residents for nearly two decades.
Visitors can enjoy peaceful walks through the fields and learn about the area’s agricultural history and environmental efforts.
