Full Description

Your journey begins in the peaceful district of Sakamoto, located at the base of Mount Hiei. This area is known for its historical ties to the monks of Enryaku-ji and features beautifully preserved streets, gardens, and religious landmarks.

Start the tour at Chikurin-in, a serene garden once part of a temple retreat. This space is renowned for its elegant landscaping, seasonal beauty, and cascading waterfall—offering a calming start to your spiritual exploration.

Next, visit Hiyoshi Taisha Shrine, the head shrine of over 3,800 Hiyoshi shrines across Japan. Its striking vermillion architecture and sacred monkey symbolism provide a fascinating window into Japan’s blend of Shinto and Buddhist beliefs. The shrine is deeply connected with Enryaku-ji Temple, reflecting the syncretic traditions of Japanese spirituality.

From there, ride the cable car up Mount Hiei, enjoying sweeping views as you ascend to Enryaku-ji. Once at the summit, delve into the deep history of Enryaku-ji Temple, founded by Saichō in the 8th century. This vast temple complex was once the training ground for many influential monks, including the founders of major Buddhist sects in Japan. Despite being destroyed during political upheaval in the 16th century, the temple was later rebuilt and continues to serve as a center of Buddhist learning and practice.

The temple grounds are surrounded by lush forest, giving visitors a sense of serenity and reverence. Your guide will explain the importance of the temple in Japan’s religious history, its architectural features, and its enduring influence.

The tour ends back at Cable Sakamoto Station, where you can reflect on your journey through one of Japan’s most sacred mountain areas.
