Kurokawa Onsen Yu Akari began in 2014 as a modest community project to extend the onsen town’s appeal into winter. Local ryokan owners and residents hand-crafted bamboo lanterns from thinned mountain bamboo—an eco-friendly forest-management practice—and placed them along the Tanoharu River. The warm glow against rising steam and snowy landscapes was an instant hit.

The event embodies Kurokawa’s philosophy of “one village, one bath”: preserving nature, supporting local craftsmanship, and creating intimate, screen-free experiences that encourage slow travel and genuine relaxation.
In its 12th year, Yu Akari remains 100% handmade and chemical-free, with lanterns carefully stored and reused each season—a quiet symbol of sustainability in one of Japan’s most pristine hot-spring valleys.
The Kurokawa Onsen Yu Akari Illumination 2025-2026 runs nightly from late December 2025 to late March 2026 (typically Dec 21 – Mar 31). Hundreds of handmade bamboo lanterns—both tall cylindrical pillars and delicate spherical temari—line the riverbanks, bridges, and Kawabata Street, casting a soft amber glow that dances on the water and mingles with rising onsen steam.
The entire town participates: lanterns appear in front of ryokan, along stone paths, and floating gently in the river. Illumination lasts from sunset (~5:30 PM) until 10:00 PM. Free to view, the experience is best enjoyed while strolling in yukata after soaking in one of Kurokawa’s famous outdoor baths.
