Overview

This commemorative exhibition traces the remarkable journey of Kojima Torajiro, a pioneering Western-style painter whose career began in Belgium and evolved into a lifelong quest to bring authentic European art to Japan. For the first time in half a century, the treasures of the Ohara Museum of Art are traveling to Osaka while the main museum undergoes renovation. The collection features legendary masterpieces including El Greco’s “The Annunciation,” Paul Gauguin’s “Fragrant Earth,” and Claude Monet’s “Water Lilies,” offering a rare opportunity to view these globally significant works outside their usual home in Kurashiki.

The exhibition’s title, “The Next Journey will be 50 Years Later,” emphasizes the rarity of this touring event, suggesting that such a comprehensive collection of Ohara’s masterpieces may not leave its home again for decades. Visitors are invited to walk through Torajiro’s eyes, exploring how his personal taste and deep friendships with European artists shaped one of Japan’s most important art collections. It is an immersive historical journey that bridges the gap between early 20th-century European modernism and the Japanese cultural landscape.
