PASONA Awaji World Ballet Tokyo started as an art project on Awaji Island in Hyogo Prefecture. This group brings dancers from over the world together. They create a cultural center in Japan. The group works on sharing cultures through art. They mix ballet moves, with deep Japanese storytelling. They also use music that comes from old Japanese traditions.
Under the direction and choreography of internationally acclaimed dancer Aimi Hariyama, the company has developed a distinctive repertoire that reimagines classical movement through a local lens. Hariyama—whose career spans major stages across Europe, North America, and Asia—brings a refined global perspective to traditional Japanese folklore.
The story is about “with Love ~Ballet ‘The Cranes Return of a Favor’ and the Pulse of Japan~”. This is a ballet that tells the story of Tsuru no Ongaeshi, which’s a very old and loved story, in Japan. The ballet is a mix of old style ballet and live music played by a group called “Kotan” that plays Japanese drums called Taiko. The main dancer is Taro Kurachi and he dances with the PASONA Awaji World Ballet group. The ballet is special because it combines the beautiful movements of classical ballet with the strong and energetic sound of Japanese drumming. The Cranes Return of a Favor is a part of this ballet and it makes the performance very interesting.
Seeing PASONA Awaji World Ballet live offers visitors an opportunity to witness Japanese folklore brought to life through world-class dance. The Taiko group Kotan is really something. It makes the whole place feel alive. The traditional drums of the Taiko group Kotan are so powerful that they make you feel like you are a part of culture. This is something that you just cannot get from a screen. The Taiko group Kotan and its traditional drums create a connection, to culture that is very strong. For international travelers in Tokyo over the autumn holiday, this single-day performance offers a rare cultural experience in the heart of the city.
