Contact Jasumo Now →Yamaguchi Kayō (1899–1984) is one of the well-known people in 20th-century Nihonga which is traditional Japanese painting. He was a person in the modern Kyoto art scene. He was born in Kyoto. Yamaguchi learned from painters Nishimura Suidō and Takeuchi Seihō. He created a style that was very refined. This style used drawings, from real life called shetsuei. It also used an decorative way of expressing things. His paintings are well known for showing animals, plants and natural scenes in a quiet and gentle way. His work shows both careful details and deep feelings of calmness.
This 50th anniversary exhibition offers a rare and comprehensive overview of his multi-decade career, spanning from his formative early years through to his mature masterworks. The exhibition’s core narrative is built around three of his most iconic and representative paintings, providing visitors with a focus lens through which to observe the evolution of his technique, composition, and vision. This presentation marks the first full-scale retrospective dedicated to Yamaguchi Kayō in Tokyo in 27 years, making it a pivotal event for art historians, cultural enthusiasts, and visitors seeking an immersive encounter with classical Japanese visual tradition.
