Contact Jasumo Now →Rugby is really big in Japans colleges. It has been that way for over a hundred years. The Kanto area has two groups of teams that play under the Kanto Rugby Football Association. These are the Kanto University Rugby Championship and the Kanto University Rugby League. Each group has eight teams from universities that play each other in the autumn season.
The Championship group has some old rivalries between some of Japans best universities. These include Waseda University, Meiji University and Keio University. There are also great schools like Teikyo University, University of Tsukuba Nippon Sport Science University, Aoyama Gakuin University and Rikkyo University. When Waseda, Meiji and Keio play each other it is a big deal. A lot of people go to these games. They help decide who will play for Japans national team, the Brave Blossoms.
At the time the League group has some really strong teams like Tokai University, Ryutsu Keizai University and Nihon University. Other great teams in this group are Hosei University, Toyo University, Senshu University, Rissho University and Kanto Gakuin University. Because they play each other in a round-robin every game is very important. The teams are all trying to be one of the best so they can play in the All-Japan University Rugby Championship later in the season. Collegiate rugby, in Japan is a thing and the Kanto University Rugby Championship and the Kanto University Rugby League are a big part of it.
Attending a Kanto University Rugby match gives a taste of Japanese sports culture that very few people from outside the country get to see. The energy in the stands is full of organized student cheer groups, brass bands and excited alumni creating a safe place for families.
Watching these games in person at places like Tokyos Chichibunomiya Rugby Stadium—often called the spiritual home of Japanese rugby—gives a clear view into the center of the countrys sports history. The fast play, careful skills and strong sense of fairness make it a special day, for any sports fan who is traveling.
