The Story: A Celebration of Japan’s Rich Wind Band Culture: Kyushu Wind Ensemble

In Japan the music scene has a place for wind orchestra performances. Because of the competition in brass band activities composers have created some of the most energetic, emotional and hard-to-play group pieces in modern classical music. The Kyushu Wind Ensemble Masterpieces Concert shows these songs on stage. It is a look back, at the famous pieces that helped shape the All-Japan Band Competition.

Kyushu Wind Ensemble

Led by conductor Nobusuke Nakata and with commentary from navigator Ozawa Club Director this concert brings together the most important works of the genre. A highlight of the program is Hirokazu Fukushimas Lucky Dragon ~Memories of the Fifth Fukuryu Maru~ a moving programmatic piece that remembers the wooden tuna fishing boat that was hit by nuclear fallout in 1954. The work alternates between calm ocean sounds and strong dramatic peaks making it a powerful moment in the brass repertoire. Modern Japanese pieces are join by transcriptions, such as J.S. Bachs famous Toccata and Fugue, in D minor BWV 565 rearranged to show the great power and color of a full wind ensemble. Played by the regarded Kyushu Wind Orchestra this concert offers a clear example of tone, precision and group playing.

Kyushu Wind Ensemble: Why Experience It Live

Attending a brass band or wind ensemble concert in Japan gives a glimpse into a passionate musical tradition. The acoustic brilliance of Fukuokas premier concert halls lifts every nuance, from woodwind solos to thunderous brass fanfares. The brass band and wind ensemble show a level of precision that is hard to find elsewhere. As a fan of music I love the brass band. For brass players for travelers visiting Kyushu and for any classical music enthusiast watching the brass band and wind ensemble perform together live, in concert is an unforgettable artistic encounter.
