Why this artist or event matters in Japan: Yukimi Nagoya Album Event
Urban Garde has created a legacy in Japanese alternative music by leading the self‑described “Trauma Techno Pop” genre. Fronted by Yoko Hamasaki and Tenma Matsunaga Urban Garde blends dark satirical looks at mental health, subculture dynamics and societal pressures, with bright electronic pop hooks and theatrical avant‑garde visual style.
Utsu Fest, also known as Depression Fest is Urban Garde’s annual event. It brings together a range of performers who dive into subcultural, dark or unusual themes. The 2026 edition features a group of Japan’s underground and alternative artists. Among them are Uchoten, Kenji Ohtsuki, Shinsei Kamatte-chan and Ryutaro Arimura. Even though the name might sound serious Japanese audiences see Utsu Fest as a fun and energetic celebration. It’s a kind of holiday, for the scene, where bold and unconventional ideas come alive through music, comedy and theater. The event is full of energy, color and life not sadness.
