Why La Cage aux Folles matters in Japan
La Cage aux Folles has a special place in Japanese theatre. The Japanese production first reache the stage in 1985, so Tokyo audiences have known the story for more than forty years. The musical follows a drag nightclub in the south of France and the family that runs it. Jean Poiret’s 1973 play inspired the musical. A film adaptation followed in 1978.
