Chaplin City Lights Ballet is a world premiere, so the 2026 run at the New National Theatre in Tokyo offers a first-performances experience rather than a revival. The National Ballet of Japan commissioned English choreographer Alastair Marriott, Principal Character Artist of The Royal Ballet, to turn Charlie Chaplin’s 1931 silent film into a full-length ballet. Marriott already knows the company, having worked on the revised choreography for Miyako Yoshida’s production of Giselle for the National Ballet of Japan.
Chaplin City Lights Ballet work has long been appreciate by Japanese audiences, and the story of the Tramp and the blind flower seller gives newcomers to ballet a familiar way in. Yoshida, who leads the National Ballet of Japan, has been broadening the company’s appeal, and a Chaplin City Lights Ballet suits that aim.
The music is a further draw. City Lights was Chaplin’s first original film score, and Chaplin music specialist Timothy Brock has adapted it for live performance by the Tokyo Philharmonic Orchestra. Kosuke Okumura is featured as the Tramp in the production’s publicity images.
For an overseas visitor, a new ballet with a live orchestra and a story that needs no translation is a rare chance to see a major Tokyo premiere in its opening run.
