Why Frau Luna matters in Japan
Frau Luna by Paul Lincke is a Berlin operetta about a mechanic who goes to the moon. Tokyo Operetta Theatre is bringing the show to Kagurazaka in Tokyo for five performances between 21 and 23 November 2026. The music includes the march Berliner Luft, which became a symbol of Berlin and is still the most famous piece from Linckes stage work.
Operetta has a devoted place in Japans classical music scene kept alive mainly by small groups rather than big opera houses. Tokyo Operetta Theatre is part of that tradition. The cast includes Michiko Hariu, Mai Kusuno, Yuki Kitazawa, Kenichiro Takashima and Hiroyuki Iida with Miki Noma playing the piano. The piano music in a hall brings the audience close to the singers, which is a very different feeling from a big opera house. The language of the performance is to be confirm.
There is a lot of interest in this run. All five performances on Saturday 21 Sunday 22 and Monday 23 November 2026 are already sold out when you buy tickets normally which makes a concierge the way to get a seat. For someone from overseas Frau Luna in Kagurazaka is a night of Berlin operetta, in one of Tokyos most special areas.
