Why Kyiv Classical Ballet matters in Japan
Kyiv Classical Ballet has created its place in Japan through regular performances instead of one big event. The company started doing tours in Japan in 2017 when it did more than 120 shows all over the country and it has come back every year since. This regular presence has made the company a known name in local theaters in cities that do not often see international ballet.
The 2026 tour shows this way of working. Kyiv Classical Ballet brings shows to Japan, including Swan Lake in two acts, a full-length Nutcracker, which the company first showed in Japan in 2024 and a show with pieces from Tchaikovsky’s three famous ballets. The Toyohashi show is the two-act Swan Lake, the popular ballet in the classic list. The company is connected to the Vaganova method the way of training and has performed in Paris, London and Rome.
Ballet fans in Japan are big and devoted. The mix of well-known Tchaikovsky music and reasonable prices brings families, new people and longtime fans to the same theater. At Toyohashi the show uses music that was recorded instead of a live orchestra.
For someone, from another country an evening of Swan Lake performed by a company in a small Japanese city offers a part of Japan’s culture that most travel plans never cover.
