You’ll start by selecting your kimono from a collection of authentic designs once used by actual maiko. Each kimono reflects the seasons with delicate floral motifs and detailed embroidery.
Your transformation begins with the removal of any existing makeup, followed by the application of traditional maiko cosmetics. White foundation is expertly applied, with a signature unpainted neckline in the “two-stripe” style to emphasize elegance. Pink and red accents around the eyes, nose, and brows bring warmth and charm to your look, while vivid eyeliner enhances the expression.
Once your makeup is complete, you’ll wear a maiko-style wig and ornate hair accessories. At Yumeyakata, every detail of the transformation is handled with care by professionals, including former maiko who share insights and help guide your poses for the photo shoot. The session takes place in a climate-controlled indoor studio, ideal for capturing high-quality images while remaining comfortable in your kimono.
Throughout the 2-hour session, you’ll not only look like a maiko but also gain a deeper understanding of their lifestyle and cultural role in Kyoto. Maiko are young apprentices training in traditional arts such as dance, shamisen music, and tea ceremony, usually aged between 15 and 20. While you don’t need to be in that age group to participate, you will get to experience the process of becoming one—from dressing to posing.
Maiko are apprentices who wear youthful, charming makeup styles and apply lipstick only on the lower lip in their early stages. Their look evolves over time as they gain experience. Geiko (the Kyoto term for geisha) wear more refined and mature makeup, with fuller lipstick and more defined eyeliner and brows.
To transition into a geiko, a maiko must master additional skills such as singing, shamisen performance, and hosting guests through traditional Japanese arts. This path involves years of dedicated practice and mentorship.
