History

Akima Plum Grove (Akima Bairin) was established in the 1960s when local farmers in Annaka’s Akima district planted thousands of plum trees on former mulberry fields abandoned after the decline of silk production. The south-facing slopes and volcanic soil proved perfect for ume cultivation, and by the 1980s, over 35,000 trees had been planted—earning Akima a place among Gunma’s “Three Great Plum Groves” alongside Misato and Yabuzaki.

The first Akima Plum Grove Festival launched in 1987 to promote the region’s umeboshi (pickled plums) and attract early-spring tourists. What began as a small gathering with food stalls and taiko drumming has grown into one of Kanto’s most beloved plum-blossom events, drawing over 200,000 visitors annually to its hillside sea of white and pink.

The festival’s timing—before cherry season—makes it a cherished “first sign of spring” for locals, who return year after year for the blossoms, performances, and community spirit.

Overview

The Akima Plum Grove Festival 2026 runs from mid-February to late March at Akima Bairin in Annaka, Gunma. Approximately 35,000 plum trees—mostly white-flowering varieties—blanket the rolling hills in fragrant blooms, creating a stunning contrast against the lingering snow on nearby Mt. Myogi.

Weekend and holiday events include taiko drumming, mochi-pounding competitions, flea markets, and food stalls serving umeboshi, plum sweets, and hot amazake. The grove’s elevated position offers sweeping views of the Kanto Plain, with clear days revealing distant Tokyo landmarks.

Free entry and parking make it an accessible day trip from Tokyo or Nagano.
