History

The Atsumi Peninsula Nanohana Festival began in 2001 when local farmers, facing declining vegetable prices, planted vast fields of rapeseed (nanohana) both for oil production and to create a new tourist draw. The peninsula’s mild, sea-moderated climate allows nanohana to bloom from January—months ahead of mainland Japan—turning former cabbage fields into a golden sea.

What started as a small community event exploded in popularity, now covering over 25 hectares at Irago Nanohana Garden alone and attracting 500,000+ visitors annually. The festival symbolizes agricultural innovation and rural revitalization: farmers earn from entry fees and flower-picking while preserving the peninsula’s farming heritage.

In recent years, early-blooming Kawazu-zakura cherries planted among the fields have added stunning pink-yellow contrasts, making Atsumi one of Japan’s most photogenic early-spring destinations.

Overview

The Atsumi Peninsula Nanohana Festival 2026 runs from mid-January to late March across the tip of Aichi’s Atsumi Peninsula. The star is Irago Nanohana Garden, where 25 hectares (over 10 million plants) create a brilliant yellow carpet visible from afar.

Visitors can walk elevated paths above the blooms, pick their own bouquet (¥100/bundle), ride grass sleds down Nacchi Hill, and enjoy nanohana-themed treats like gelato and tempura. Weekend events include live music, flea markets, and a nanohana labyrinth. Late February to early March often brings early cherry blossoms for a rare pink-on-yellow spectacle.
