City Lights Ballet is a brand-new ballet receiving its world premiere in Tokyo, commissioned by the New National Theatre for its 2026/27 season. The ballet adapts Charlie Chaplin’s 1931 silent film, a story of laughter, sorrow, and selfless love that remains one of the most cherished titles in Chaplin’s career. Japanese audiences have a long-standing affection for Chaplin’s work, which makes the subject a natural entry point for newcomers to ballet as well as devoted regulars.
The score is a central attraction. Chaplin composed the music for City Lights himself as his first original film score, and the conductor Timothy Brock, a recognized authority on Chaplin’s music, has adapted it for live performance by the Tokyo Philharmonic Orchestra.
The choreography is by Alastair Marriott, Principal Character Artist of The Royal Ballet, who previously revised the choreography of Giselle for the National Ballet of Japan under its artistic director Miyako Yoshida. The production continues Yoshida’s effort to modernize the company while drawing on her deep knowledge of the British classical tradition. Kosuke Okumura is feature as the Tramp in the production’s promotional material, although casting may change.
For an overseas visitor, City Lights offers the chance to see the world premiere of a story known across the globe, performed with a live orchestra in one of Tokyo’s leading theatres.
