The Fukagawa Hachiman Matsuri is one of Tokyo’s three great Shinto festivals, held every three years in its full-scale version. In 2026, the festival will return in its grand form, bringing a spectacular display of tradition, energy, and water-soaked festivities. Hosted at Tomioka Hachiman Shrine, this lively event attracts thousands of visitors eager to experience one of Japan’s most thrilling cultural celebrations.

Why You Shouldn’t Miss It

  • Dynamic Procession of Mikoshi: Over 50 mikoshi (portable shrines) are carried through the streets by enthusiastic participants.
  • The ‘Water-Throwing’ Festival: Spectators and firefighters drench the mikoshi bearers with buckets of water to cool them off, symbolizing purification and blessings.
  • Samurai History & Cultural Heritage: The festival has deep roots in Edo-period traditions, paying homage to the historic Tomioka Hachiman Shrine.
  • Lively Street Festivities: Enjoy traditional music, dance performances, and vibrant festival stalls offering local street food.

What to Expect

  • Soaked in Tradition – Literally: Unlike most festivals, getting drenched is part of the fun, so be prepared to embrace the refreshing water splashes.
  • Crowded but Electric Atmosphere: The festival draws thousands of locals and tourists, creating an unforgettable energy-filled experience.
  • Delicious Festival Food: Savor yakitori, takoyaki, kakigori (shaved ice), and other summer treats from the food stalls.
  • Sacred Rituals & Fireworks: Experience Shinto ceremonies at the shrine and end the night with a dazzling fireworks display over the Sumida River.
