Golden Pavilion (Kinkaku-ji)
Kinkaku-ji, or the Golden Pavilion, is one of Kyoto’s most iconic landmarks and a UNESCO World Heritage Site. Originally a 14th-century shogun’s villa, the temple is known for its top two floors completely covered in gold leaf. Reflecting over a tranquil pond, it’s a truly breathtaking sight. Learn about the history, symbolism, and architectural brilliance of this Zen Buddhist temple.
Nijo Castle
Step into the world of feudal Japan at Nijo Castle, another UNESCO-listed treasure. Here you’ll hear the fascinating stories of shoguns, samurai, and the shifting power between military rulers and the emperor. Walk across the famous “nightingale floors,” designed to chirp underfoot as an early warning system.
