History

Hikarinosumika (“Home of Light”) launched in 1996 as a modest winter display at Gotemba Kogen Resort Toki no Sumika. From a few hundred thousand bulbs, it has evolved into one of Japan’s largest and most innovative illuminations, marking its 30th anniversary in the 2025-2026 season.

Over three decades, the event pioneered massive LED installations, synchronized fountain shows, and projection mapping, earning Japan Night View Heritage status and the 2024 International Illumination Award. Each year features a new theme—the 2025-2026 “Magic Forest” introduces a redesigned 20-meter Mt. Fuji-inspired symbol tree and richer storytelling.

What began as a local winter warmer now attracts millions annually, blending cutting-edge technology with the natural majesty of Mt. Fuji’s foothills.

Overview

The Hikarinosumika Illumination Display 2025-2026 “Magic Forest” runs from October 11, 2025 to March 8, 2026, draping the entire Toki no Sumika resort in 5.5 million LED bulbs. The iconic 400-meter Tunnel of Light and most outdoor areas are completely free, while premium experiences like the 150-meter Royal Light Symphony fountain-laser show require tickets.

With on-site hot springs, a craft beer brewery, goldfish aquarium, and the glowing Sakura chapel, it’s easy to turn a visit into a full evening or overnight winter escape with family or friends.
