Full description

The district of Higashiyama is full of Kyoto must-see locations. Higashiyama means East Mountain, and this tour takes place at the foothills of the mountain range that forms the Eastern border of central Kyoto.

Start off your tour at Fushimi Inari Taisha, a Shinto shrine located in the southern part of the Higashiyama mountain range. Pass through the mystical vermilion torii gates that snake up the mountainside. Beyond the gates, you’ll find the shrine dedicated to Shinto history and culture.

Take a short train ride from Fushimi Inari to Gion and listen to the stories your guide shares about this colorful, much-storied playground of the geisha. Gion is a special place as it continues to be an active part of modern-day Kyoto culture.

Stroll through the streets of Higashiyama and enjoy the peaceful atmosphere. Visit the Kodaiji Temple (admission included) and immerse yourself in the serenity of its gardens and bamboo grove. The temple complex dates back to the early 17th century.

Take some snacks or shop for souvenirs along Sannenzaka, then walk your way up to Kiyomizu-dera Temple. Upon arrival, enjoy a spectacular view of Kyoto. The temple is famous for its pure mountain water flowing into the Otowa Waterfall. Drink from one of the three divided streams, each said to offer health, wealth, or happiness—but choose only one, as legend says the greedy receive none.

The tour concludes after the Kiyomizudera visit. You’re then free to explore the area on your own.

Reviews

Damian was very knowledgeable about Japanese history so we learned many new facts. He showed us several small shrines that were literally off the path. He was very accommodating in adjusting the tour since it was very hot and humid and I became tired from all the steps and hills.

We really enjoyed the tour. Our guide, Lito, was excellent. Not only did he tell us about the places we visited, but he also shared links to places to eat and other useful information. This tour was a great overview of some fascinating attractions of Kyoto. It was a great walk and somehow we avoided the crowds and managed to get wonderful photo shots. My kids, 11 and 18 years old, loved the tour as much as I did. Lito got them very engaged with stories of the temples, making wishes, finding luck, and other interesting traditional rituals.

We were fortunate to have our superb guide Damien all to ourselves on this extremely interesting and informative four-hour tour. Damien was wonderful—he combined a passion for all things Japanese with in-depth knowledge of Japanese history, customs, and culture. A great way to get a quick glimpse of what Kyoto has to offer. Highly recommended.
