Full Description

Calligraphy is a cherished art form in Japan, taught in schools and revered for its meditative discipline. In this 70-minute workshop, you’ll step into the calm ambiance of a Buddhist temple and explore the graceful strokes of ink on washi paper under the guidance of a skilled instructor with over a decade of experience.

You’ll begin with a short introduction to the cultural and historical background of Japanese calligraphy, followed by a hands-on session that includes:

  1. Choosing a Kanji character or word that resonates with you
  2. Learning to use traditional tools like brush, ink, and washi
  3. Practicing basic strokes and your chosen character
  4. Creating your own artwork on your selected item
  5. Taking home your calligraphy masterpiece as a one-of-a-kind souvenir

Your final piece can be created on a variety of surfaces, such as:

  • A keychain (crafted from heat-shrinkable plastic)
  • Shikishi (decorative square board)
  • Gayoushi (drawing paper)
  • Sensu (folding paper fan)
  • Uchiwa (flat paper fan)
  • Traditional washi paper

The class is held in a tatami-floored washitsu, where guests are seated on the floor with cushions. A few desks are available for those who may have difficulty sitting on the floor, though space is limited.

This experience tends to be quiet and focused, as participants concentrate on crafting beautiful, meaningful characters.
