Full Description

Tea Ceremony and Kimono Rental Plan

Start at Gojo Shop at the selected time to choose your kimono. A wide range of designs, colors, and sizes is available. If you’ve selected the add-on, women can also receive hairstyling, makeup, and an upgrade to a formal kimono (Houmongi).

After dressing, you’ll head on your own to Yumeyakata Oike Bettei, a beautifully preserved 100-year-old machiya. Your tea ceremony begins two hours after your original start time (e.g., arrive at Gojo Shop at 11:00 AM → ceremony begins at 1:00 PM). Afterward, you are free to walk around Kyoto in your kimono until returning it by 5:30 PM.

Tea Ceremony Only (Without Kimono Rental)

Arrive at Oike Bettei 5–10 minutes before your selected time.

Tea Ceremony Experience

Start with an introduction to the origins and philosophy of the Japanese tea ceremony, which evolved from Chinese roots over 1,200 years ago. You’ll be guided on how to bow, greet, eat sweets, drink tea, and appreciate the tea utensils.

Watch as the tea master prepares the first tea, then try making your own bowl of matcha under their guidance. After the experience, feel free to ask questions or explore further.

Optional Add-On: Kyo-Machiya Tour

If selected, you’ll be invited to a 30-minute townhouse tour immediately after the ceremony. Walk through the traditional architecture while learning about the history, cultural role, and features of these historic Kyoto homes.

The tea house is located near Kyoto Gosho (Imperial Palace) and adjacent to the former residence of Nijō Yoshimoto (1320–1388) — a nobleman and pioneer of Japan’s literary culture. This historically rich area has long served as the center of refined court life, making your tea ceremony not only a cultural activity but also a connection to centuries of aristocratic tradition.
