Jia grew up in the city of Luoyang, China, immersed in traditional music. He later performed with the China Railroad Youth Art Troupe and the China National Traditional Orchestra. In search of new artistic horizons, he moved to Japan in the late 1980s, where his expressive technique soon attracted the attention of top composers, listeners and international film producers.
Jia’s decades-long career in Japan has included both the Eastern and the Western musical traditions. He has recorded performance tracks for major film soundtracks, television documentaries and video games – most notably with acclaimed composer Joe Hisaishi – and released several globally-acclaimed studio albums under the Pacific Moon record label. His rich, melancholic, yet deeply uplifting timbre has contributed importantly to the popularization of erhu in Japan, and around the world.
This is a special show in September 2026 at Shibuya Cultural Center Owada Densho Hall, with a rare ensemble crossing disciplines. Joining Jia Pengfang on stage are pianist Minfa Plunger, traditional Japanese instrumentalists Seiji Ibukuro (koto) and Jinju Nakamura (shakuhachi), as well as a live performance of kenjutsu (traditional Japanese swordsmanship). The collaboration is a reflective and powerful conversation between classical Chinese melody, Japanese traditional arts and contemporary performance.
A classic fusion concert in Japan provides an up-close view of the country’s contemporary acoustic performance culture. The acoustics of the Densho Hall are tuned for traditional, lightly amplified and unamplified instruments, so audience members can hear every subtle breath on the shakuhachi, the resonance of the koto strings and the vocal quality of Jia’s erhu. The evening is lifted from a regular concert to a full theatrical experience by watching the physical beauty of kenjutsu play in direct rhythm with live music.
