To celebrate the anniversary of the birth of Kobo Daishi (Kukai) the Tokyo National Museum is hosting a huge special exhibition. This special exhibition features treasures, deep esoteric art and historic Buddhist masterworks. I think this is a chance for anyone to see such a big collection of cultural heritage. It truly feels like a once-, in-a-generation event.

The Story: Kukai and the Legacy of Shingon Buddhism

Kukai (774–835 CE) later called Kobo Daishi is one of the important people in Japanese history. He was a scholar, a poet, a calligrapher and a monk. Kukai went to China during the Tang dynasty in the ninth century to learn about the secret teachings of Tantric Buddhism. After he came back to Japan he started the Shingon sect. He built a monastery on top of Mount Koya, which is called Koyasan in Wakayama Prefecture.

Shingon Buddhism means ” Word.” It brought an very visual way of thinking about religion to Japan. Different from traditions Shingon uses a lot of special images, complex mandalas, hand gestures and ritual items to share teachings that go beyond words. Kukai believed that people could reach awakening while they are still, in their physical bodies. This could happen through work and using these holy forms.

Kukai Exhibition Tickets

To celebrate Kukai’s birthday, the Heiseikan at the Tokyo National Museum offers a wide look at Shingon art and history. The display shows treasures, important cultural items and rare temple keepsakes that come from Koyasan and major Shingon temples all over Japan. Visitors can see Mandalas of the Two Realms statues from the Heian age and hand‑written scrolls, by Kukai himself. Because these old objects are fragile only some are shown at a time so each visit feels new and special.

Why Experience It Live

Kukai Exhibition Tickets

Seeing Buddhist art inside a museum is a special way to look at the visual and spiritual history of Japan. Most art in a gallery is just meant to be looked at. These masterworks were actually made to help people meditate and pray. When you stand in front of statues that are hundreds of years old and see the hand-painted mandalas you really feel the scale and the hard work that went into making them. You can see how much respect people had for religion, in Japanese culture. If you are a traveller visiting Tokyo these Kukai Exhibition Tickets give you a chance to see treasures that are usually hidden away in quiet mountain temples.
