The centerpiece of your adventure is a nostalgic ride on the Kurobe Gorge Railway, a narrow-gauge electric trolley that winds through 20 kilometers of untouched wilderness. Beyond the rail, you will discover the healing charm of Unazuki Onsen, a premier hot spring town where traditional architecture and steaming footbaths offer a tranquil escape. It is a well-paced journey that balances the excitement of alpine travel with the restorative power of Japanese nature.

Guided by a licensed English-speaking professional, you will travel in a private chartered vehicle to ensure a seamless transition from the pier to the mountains. With our Back-to-Ship Guarantee, you can lose yourself in the majesty of Sarutobi Canyon and the vibrant turquoise waters of the Kurobe River, knowing your return to the port is perfectly synchronized with your ship’s departure.

Cruise Information

This 8-hour shore excursion is meticulously synchronized with the docking schedules of major cruise lines at the Port of Toyama and the Port of Kanazawa. We provide expert logistics for passengers arriving on the Diamond Princess, MS Westerdam, Celebrity Millennium, and Queen Elizabeth.

Your private guide and driver will meet you directly at the cruise terminal with a Jasumo welcome board immediately upon your ship’s arrival. Because the Kurobe region is approximately 60–80 minutes from the ports, our private transportation is the most efficient way to maximize your time in the gorge. We guarantee your return to the pier at least one hour before the “all aboard” time, ensuring a stress-free transition back to your ship.

Full Itinerary

Your alpine journey begins with a private transfer to Unazuki Onsen, the gateway to the Kurobe Gorge. Upon arrival, you will have time to explore this charming town, famous for its exceptionally clear hot spring waters. You can dip your feet in the riverside footbaths or photograph the iconic red bridges that span the emerald river before heading to the railway station.

Next, you will board the Kurobe Gorge Railway for an 80-minute trolley ride. As the train rattles along the steep cliffs, you will see the turquoise waters of the Kurobe River, mysterious dams, and remote mountain huts. The open-air carriages allow for unobstructed views and fresh mountain air as you pass through some of the most rugged terrain in Japan. Upon reaching Keyakidaira Station, the deepest point of the line, you will explore the dramatic Sarutobi Canyon. You can walk the riverside trails to witness the power of the water and see the famous “Monkey Jumping Bridge.”

After soaking in the mountain scenery and exploring the “Man-eating Rock” formation, you will enjoy a relaxing return journey on the trolley, seeing the gorge from a different perspective as the afternoon light shifts across the peaks. Your driver will be waiting at Unazuki to escort you back to the port, potentially stopping at Shin-Kurobe for regional souvenirs or a view of the high-speed Shinkansen lines before arriving back at your ship in perfect time for departure.

Faqs

When is the best time of year to visit Kurobe Gorge?

The railway operates from mid-April to late November. Spring offers views of remaining snow on the peaks and fresh greenery, while the autumn season (late October to early November) is world-famous for the fiery red and gold maple leaves that coat the canyon walls.

Is the trolley train ride cold or uncomfortable?

While the open-air carriages are the most popular for photography, we can arrange “Relaxation” or “First Class” enclosed carriages with windows and heating if the mountain air is chilly. We always recommend bringing a light jacket, even in summer, as the temperature drops inside the tunnels.

How much walking is involved at Keyakidaira?

The walk to Sarutobi Canyon and the Okukane Bridge is relatively flat and takes about 20–30 minutes at a gentle pace. For those with limited mobility, the area immediately around the station still offers spectacular views and a visitor center with local exhibits.

Can we actually bathe in the hot springs during the tour?

While the tour focuses on sightseeing, there are several public footbaths in Unazuki Onsen that are free to use. If you would like a full hot spring experience, we can customize your private itinerary to include a “day-use” bath at a local ryokan.

What makes the water in the Kurobe River so blue?

The striking turquoise or emerald color of the water is due to the extreme clarity of the alpine snowmelt and the way light reflects off the fine mineral particles and white granite stones on the riverbed, creating a “Kurobe Blue” effect.
