Overview

Step away from the bustle of Kumamoto City and spend a day unwinding in the picturesque hot spring town of Kurokawa Onsen, one of Japan’s most charming and atmospheric onsen destinations. This self-guided day tour includes round-trip bus transportation and a luxurious tofu-based lunch at Tofu Kissho, a restaurant renowned for its seasonal, delicate flavors and traditional Japanese preparation.

Enjoy the freedom to explore at your own pace—wander through serene streets, visit local shops, and, if you choose, purchase a bathing pass (Onsen Hopping Pass) to soak in up to three of Kurokawa’s 20+ outdoor hot springs.

Itinerary (Approximate Timing)

08:33 – Depart from Kumamoto Station (Bus Stop No. 7)
Ride the comfortable long-distance bus to Kurokawa Onsen. Travel time is approximately 1 hour and 50 minutes.

10:30 – Arrive at Kurokawa Onsen Bus Stop
From here, it’s about a 10-minute walk to Tofu Kissho. Enjoy the peaceful mountain air and charming architecture as you stroll through the town.

11:00–13:00 – Lunch at Tofu Kissho (Tofu Kaiseki Set Meal)
Enjoy a beautifully prepared Japanese meal centered around handcrafted tofu dishes made from locally sourced ingredients.
Lunch must be started by 13:00. Drinks and additional dishes can be ordered at your own expense.

13:00–16:15 – Free Time to Explore Kurokawa Onsen
Wander the picturesque lanes, shop for handmade crafts or local sweets, or relax in a historic bathhouse.

A hot spring bathing pass is not included but can be purchased at the Kurokawa Onsen Tourist Inn Cooperative (Kaze no Ya) for ¥1,500.

16:25 – Board Bus for Return to Kumamoto
Meet at the Kurokawa Onsen bus stop. The return ride takes approximately 1 hour and 45 minutes.

18:14 – Arrive back at Kumamoto Station

Important Notes

  • This is a self-guided tour. No tour guide or escort is provided.
  • Make your lunch reservation between 11:00 and 13:00; lunch service ends at 14:00.
  • Seats on the bus are limited; book at least 3 days in advance for confirmation.
  • Onsen passes can be purchased at the Kurokawa Onsen Tourist Information Center (Kaze no Ya).
  • Please arrive at the bus stop 10 minutes early for boarding.
