Kyoto Highlights
- Kinkaku-ji Temple
Your day begins with a visit to the breathtaking Golden Pavilion, a stunning Zen temple whose top two floors are entirely covered in gold leaf. Reflecting on the surrounding pond, it’s one of Kyoto’s most iconic views.
- Fushimi Inari Taisha
Next, walk through the spiritual red torii gates of Fushimi Inari, winding up the hillside in a tunnel of vermillion. This shrine is dedicated to the god of rice and prosperity.
- Sanjusangendo (Optional)
Time permitting, visit this lesser-known but incredible temple featuring 1,001 statues of Kannon, the Buddhist goddess of mercy, lined in Japan’s longest wooden hall.
Nara Highlights
After Kyoto, you’ll drive to nearby Nara, another ancient capital rich with sacred sites and serene landscapes.
- Todaiji Temple
Visit Todaiji, a UNESCO World Heritage Site that houses a 15-meter-tall bronze Buddha. The temple itself is the largest wooden building in the world and an awe-inspiring experience.
- Nara Park
Just outside the temple, walk among hundreds of free-roaming, gentle deer in Nara Park. Feed them deer crackers and enjoy a calm, close encounter with nature.
Optional Kyoto Stops (Time Permitting)
If time allows before returning:
- Nishiki Market – Enjoy Kyoto’s historic food street with dozens of local specialties and traditional snacks
- Gion District – Walk the charming stone-paved lanes of Gion, Kyoto’s famous geisha quarter, lined with tea houses and traditional wooden buildings
- Sannenzaka & Ninenzaka – Stroll through Kyoto’s most picturesque historic lanes near Kiyomizu-dera
End your day with drop-off back at your Kyoto accommodation.
