Complete Details

Your day of cultural discovery begins with a warm welcome at your cruise terminal. Your guide and driver will be waiting at the Osaka or Kobe pier to escort you to the serene eastern hills of Kyoto.

Our first stop is Kiyomizu-dera Temple. You will witness the spiritual practices of local residents and marvel at the architectural wonder of the main hall, built without a single nail. From there, we proceed to Jinmatsuan for the day’s centerpiece: Lunch with a Maiko. You will learn the art of preparing green tea with Wasanbon (traditional sweets), enjoy a private dance performance, and have the rare opportunity for conversation and photos with the Maiko.

The afternoon takes you to the Ando Japanese Doll Shop, where tradition has been preserved for over a century. Under the guidance of Master Artisan Keiho, you will select patterns and dress a traditional doll, learning the intricate techniques of obi belt placement. The journey concludes at the majestic Nijo-jo Castle, where you will walk through the Ninomaru Palace and its stunning landscape gardens. Finally, relax in your private vehicle as we drive you directly back to your port, arriving well before your “all aboard” time.

FAQs

Which port will my ship dock at for Kyoto? While itineraries list “Kyoto,” cruise ships actually dock at the Port of Osaka or Kobe Port. Both are roughly 60–90 minutes from the city. We coordinate with port authorities to ensure your driver is waiting at the exact berth assigned to your vessel.

Do I need prior experience for the Doll Making workshop? Not at all. The workshop is designed for beginners. Master Artisan Keiho provides step-by-step guidance, focusing on the cultural enjoyment of dressing the doll in traditional silk.

Can I talk to the Maiko during lunch? Yes. Unlike a public performance, this experience at Jinmatsuan includes a Q&A session and a photo opportunity, allowing for a more personal interaction with the Maiko.

Is the “Nightingale Floor” at Nijo-jo Castle always active? Yes. The floors were designed to “chirp” when stepped on as a security measure against intruders. You will be able to hear them as you walk through the palace halls.

Does the “Back-to-Ship Guarantee” cover traffic? Yes. Our guarantee ensures we monitor traffic and your ship’s schedule in real-time. We plan to have you back at the pier at least 1 hour before departure. In the rare event of a delay, we coordinate and cover your transport to the next port.
