Full Description

Zen gardens, known as Karesansui, are carefully designed dry landscape gardens usually found in temples across Kyoto. They are meant to be appreciated quietly, not touched — but at Ninshu, a unique pottery shop and café, you’re invited to create your own.

In this hands-on experience, you’ll shape patterns in white sand and decorate the garden with ceramic vessels in the peaceful backyard of a traditional Kyoto townhouse. This interactive Zen garden experience is one of the few in the city that allows guests to personally engage with this sacred art form.

After your garden is complete, relax with a cup of matcha from Ippodo, one of Kyoto’s most respected tea companies, served alongside seasonal wagashi (Japanese sweets) from the long-established confectioner Senbon Tamajushuken. You can take photos of yourself enjoying your tea in front of your handcrafted garden — a perfect Kyoto memory.

To complete the cultural immersion, browse handmade pottery available for sale in the shop. The ceramics are dishwasher- and microwave-safe, making them practical as well as beautiful souvenirs for yourself or loved ones.

Reviews

“A peaceful and creative Kyoto memory”
“This was a fun experience, but a little different than we expected. You’ll rake and decorate a zen garden in the back of a pottery shop, which can be done quickly if you’re decisive. Then you have iced or hot matcha with a mochi cookie. There’s not a lot of instruction — it’s free form — but it can be really enjoyable if you’re creative!”
