Mayumi Miyata is well knowing for being a leader in bringing the sho—a Japanese bamboo mouth organ that was very important in gagaku, which is the music of the imperial court—into the world of classical music. By working with composers in the 20th century Miyata changed an old ceremonial instrument into a flexible tool for modern music.
This performance, called “Reviving Ancient Scores and the Sho in the Modern Age Series VI-1 ” shows Miyatas two sides as an artist. The concert includes copies of old music from the historical document Hōōkan Yōryaku Fu, which was checked by professor Toru Endo from Tokyo Gakugei University. Alongside these pieces Miyata plays new music written for the sho by famous composers like Toru Takemitsu (Distance, Ceremonial) and Toshio Hosokawa (Fragments to Birds III). The music is play with flute player Yoshie Ueno and oboist Kanami Araki.
