  • Gain historical insight with an official guide
  • Enjoy exclusive access to parts of the castle not open to the general public

Full Description

Built in 1603 as the Kyoto residence of Tokugawa Ieyasu, the first shogun of the Edo Period, Nijo Castle played a central role in Japanese history. After the fall of the Tokugawa Shogunate in 1867, the castle became an imperial residence before being opened to the public.

Today, it stands as a UNESCO World Heritage Site and one of Japan’s most significant cultural treasures.

The castle grounds are divided into three main areas:

  • Honmaru: The central circle of defense
  • Ninomaru: The secondary circle of defense
  • The surrounding gardens, beautifully landscaped and seasonally colored

On this guided tour, you’ll pass through the magnificent Karamon Gate and explore the grand Ninomaru Palace, the former residence and office of the shogun during his Kyoto visits. The palace remains one of the most remarkable surviving structures from Japan’s feudal era.

This 60-minute tour, led by an official castle guide, offers exclusive access to areas usually closed to the public, providing a unique opportunity to learn about Japan’s political history, architecture, and samurai-era legacy.

Kiku was very knowledgeable about history and provided fascinating insight into court intrigue and power struggles.

Miki was a very engaging guide, and the small group size made the experience more personal. We really enjoyed learning the historical significance of the castle.
