The f/4 version is significantly lighter (approx. 500g vs 805g) and more compact due to its retractable design. For a tourist prioritizing portability, size, and all-day carry comfort, the f/4 offers nearly equivalent image quality in a more travel-friendly package.
A short minimum focusing distance of 0 point 3m means you can get very close to your subject, even at 70mm, achieving a maximum magnification of 0 point 3 times. This is excellent for frame-filling close-ups of food, plants, or small details.
When the lens is not in use, you rotate the zoom ring to the retracted position, making the lens noticeably shorter and easier to store. To begin shooting, you rotate the zoom ring to 24mm, extending the lens to its operational length.
While f/2 point 8 is faster, f/4 is still a very capable aperture, especially when paired with the excellent high-ISO performance and in-body stabilization of Nikon Z cameras. It performs well in most indoor and twilight conditions.
“S-Line” is Nikon’s designation for their premium optics, meaning this lens is designed for maximum sharpness, superior resolution, and excellent correction of aberrations, delivering professional-grade results despite its compact size.
