Equipped with ED glass and the Nano Crystal Coat, this manual focus lens is essential for high-end architectural, landscape, and product photography.
This PC-E lens is designed for precision and creative control. The “Shift” function corrects converging vertical lines, making it indispensable for architectural photography of Japanese temples and cityscapes. The “Tilt” function allows the photographer to manipulate the focal plane, selectively maximizing or minimizing depth of field—a technique known as the Scheimpflug principle.
The PC-E Micro NIKKOR 45mm f/2.8D ED features an optical construction of 9 elements in 8 groups, with ED elements to ensure exceptional clarity. The lens is equipped with an electronic aperture (E-type) but is manual focus only.
Its standout feature is the full range of movements: plus or minus 11.5 mm of shift (for perspective correction) and plus or minus 8.5 degrees of tilt (for depth of field manipulation). This functionality, combined with the 1/2x magnification capability, makes it a unique and powerful tool for capturing detailed texture and perfect vertical lines in everything from products to buildings.

The Shift function moves the lens parallel to the sensor plane. Its primary use is perspective correction, preventing parallel lines (like the sides of a tall building) from appearing to converge when the camera is pointed upwards. The Tilt function rotates the lens relative to the sensor plane. Its primary use is depth of field control, allowing you to change the plane of focus to maximize or minimize sharpness across an area, such as focusing sharply on a street that extends away from the camera while using a wide aperture.
Perspective Control (PC) lenses are manual focus only because the lens movements (tilt and shift) physically change the relationship between the lens, the focusing mechanism, and the sensor. This precise optical manipulation is best achieved by manual adjustment rather than a motorized autofocus system, which cannot account for the Scheimpflug principle used by the tilt function.
The “Micro” designation means this lens can focus very closely, achieving high magnification. The 45mm PC-E Micro can focus down to 0.253 m, providing a maximum magnification of 1/2x (half life-size). This adds versatility, allowing the specialized controls of the tilt/shift lens to be used for close-up work, like detailed product shots.
When mounted on a Nikon DX-format camera, the 45mm focal length is effectively multiplied by 1.5x, giving you an equivalent field of view of approximately 67.5mm. This transforms it into a short telephoto PC lens, which is excellent for architecture and product photography where a slightly narrower field of view is desired.
Architectural and interior photography often involves shooting high-contrast scenes, such as bright light fixtures, windows, or sunlit exteriors. The Nano Crystal Coat is a specialized anti-reflective coating that drastically reduces flare and ghosting caused by these bright light sources, preserving the contrast, color, and sharp lines critical to architectural detail.
