It is designed to the highest professional standards, featuring a dust-proof and drip-proof construction, silent High-speed AF, and superior optical coatings, all packed into a portable body weighing just 390g.
Renting the 17mm F1.2 PRO is ideal if you prioritize shooting in low light (such as indoors or at night) and desire exceptional depth-of-field control to separate your subject sharply from the background. Its 34mm equivalent field of view provides a natural perspective, making it a perfect storytelling lens for your Japanese journey.
The optical design comprises 15 elements in 11 groups, utilizing a complex array of specialized glass, including one Super ED, three ED, one ED-DSA (Dual Super Aspherical), one EDA (Extra-low Dispersion Aspherical), one Super HR, and one Aspherical lens. This extensive and advanced optical formula is key to achieving both extreme sharpness and the beautifully feathered bokeh quality Olympus designed this lens for. The lens also features Z Coating Nano to eliminate reflections and internal flare, ensuring high clarity and contrast even in difficult lighting conditions.
The lens uses the MSC (Movie and Still Compatible) mechanism, providing extremely fast, high-precision, and silent autofocus, essential for discreet street photography and video work. Furthermore, the F1.2 aperture allows for superior performance in low-light environments, and the lens has a very close minimum focusing distance of 0.2m (20cm), yielding a maximum magnification equivalent to 0.3x, allowing for close-up shots that emphasize foreground detail against a blurred background.

An F1.2 aperture allows a massive amount of light in, enabling much faster shutter speeds in low light compared to F1.8 or F2.8 lenses. Crucially, it creates an extremely shallow depth of field, producing significant background blur (bokeh) that beautifully isolates the subject.
The 34mm equivalent focal length is slightly wider than the standard 50mm, offering a view very close to how the human eye perceives a scene. It is wide enough to capture a subject within its environment without the distortion associated with ultra-wide lenses.
While it can be used for landscape, its primary strength is low-light and portraiture. For landscapes, you would typically stop the lens down to F5.6 or F8 for maximum depth of field, negating the F1.2 benefit. However, the high resolution and weather-sealing make it a viable, sharp option.
With a minimum focusing distance of 0.2m, you can get very close to small subjects while still retaining the ability to throw the background completely out of focus with the F1.2 aperture, creating dramatic and detailed close-up images.
Remarkably, Olympus engineered this PRO lens to maintain extremely high resolution even when shot wide open at F1.2. The complex optical formula is specifically designed to achieve this rare combination of speed, bokeh quality, and sharpness.
