About the Product

The M.ZUIKO DIGITAL ED 50-200mm F2.8 IS PRO boasts a complex optical construction of 21 elements in 13 groups, including specialized glass (1 EDA, 2 Super ED, 1 ED, 2 HR, 3 E-HR lenses) to virtually eliminate chromatic aberration and deliver stunning clarity. The fluorine coating on the front element and multiple ZERO coatings protect the lens and minimize flare and ghosting.

The in-lens Image Stabilization (VCM mechanism) works in synergy with compatible Olympus bodies to achieve 7.0 stops of corrective power, making handheld shooting at 400mm (equivalent) highly reliable. The lens is compatible with Olympus teleconverters: the MC-14 turns it into a 560mm F4.0, and the MC-20 turns it into an 800mm F5.6 (equivalent). It also features a useful removable tripod mount and high-speed MSC autofocus.

  • High-speed Imager AF (MSC) for quick focus acquisition.

Faqs:

How does the “100mm to 400mm equivalent” range translate in photography?

This range covers classic short telephoto (100mm equivalent) through to powerful super telephoto (400mm equivalent). It’s incredibly useful for isolating subjects from backgrounds, making distant objects appear large in the frame, and compressing perspective in landscapes.

What is 5-axis Sync Image Stabilization, and why is 7 stops important?

5-axis Sync IS combines the lens’s built-in stabilization with the stabilization system of compatible Olympus camera bodies. 7 stops of correction means you can theoretically handhold a shot at a shutter speed 128 times slower than you could without IS and still achieve sharpness, which is a massive advantage for shooting in low light or at 400mm equivalent.

What is the benefit of the high close-up shooting capability (0.5x equivalent)?

A 0.5x equivalent maximum magnification means the lens can capture subjects at half life-size. This allows you to take detailed close-ups of flowers, insects, or cultural artifacts without needing to carry a dedicated macro lens, adding to the lens’s versatility.

Can I use this lens in the rain or dusty environments?

Yes, the IP53-equivalent dust and water resistance is a robust level of protection, indicating the lens is resistant to dust intrusion and spraying water. This makes it highly dependable for use in adverse weather conditions common during travel.

I have an Olympus teleconverter. How do the specs change with the MC-20?

With the MC-20 (2x teleconverter) attached, the focal length is doubled (becoming 100-400mm on the lens, or 800mm equivalent). The aperture is reduced by two stops, making the new constant maximum aperture F5.6.
