Tsukigase Plum Grove (Tsukigase Baikei) traces its origins to the Edo period when local farmers began cultivating plum trees along the steep slopes of the Nabari River valley for fruit production. The area’s unique microclimate—cool winters, misty mornings, and well-drained soil—proved ideal for ume, and by the early 20th century over 10,000 trees had been planted.

Contact Jasumo Now →The grove gained fame in the Showa era when poets and photographers discovered its ethereal beauty: clouds of white and pink blossoms floating above the river like mist. In 1973 it was designated a Prefectural Scenic Beauty Spot, and the annual festival launched in the 1980s to share this “hidden gem” with visitors.
Today, Tsukigase remains one of Japan’s most dramatic plum-blossom destinations—often called “the valley where clouds of flowers bloom.”
Plum Blossoms at Tsukigase Plum Grove 2026 run from early February to late March, when approximately 10,000 red, pink, and white plum trees explode into bloom along the steep, misty Nabari River valley. The dramatic topography creates a breathtaking “sea of clouds” effect as blossoms fill the entire gorge.
Peak viewing is mid-February to mid-March, with weekend food stalls, plum ice cream, and events at the Tsukigase Plum Museum. The combination of vibrant flowers, river reflections, and surrounding mountains makes it one of Nara’s most photogenic early-spring destinations.
