Overview

The critically acclaimed British play “Private Fears in Public Places” by legendary playwright Alan Ayckbourn finally makes its Japanese debut in the spring of 2026. This production brings together a stellar creative team, featuring translation by Soshi Odajima and direction by Yoyasu Motoyoshi. The play is renowned for its unique structure, following six lonely souls in London whose lives intersect in a series of short, cinematic scenes that explore themes of missed connections, hidden desires, and the quiet desperation of modern life.

The Japanese production is particularly notable for its double-cast system, offering two distinct interpretations of this complex human drama. Set against the intimate backdrop of Theater Daikanyama, the play utilizes a sophisticated revolving set design to mirror the overlapping lives of its characters. With a cast featuring seasoned stage veterans like Kazumi Komada and Soma Suzuki alongside rising stars, this premiere promises to be a landmark event in the 2026 Tokyo theatrical season.
