Full Description

A kimono (きもの) is a traditional Japanese garment worn for work, ceremonies, and special occasions. Though its appearance may seem simple, wearing a kimono correctly requires multiple layers and accessories that can be difficult to manage without instruction.

This private lesson provides hands-on instruction from a professional kimono expert who will visit you at your hotel. In about two hours, you’ll learn:

  • The cultural significance and structure of the kimono
  • How to identify and use each accessory properly
  • How to fold and care for your kimono
  • Techniques to wear the kimono by yourself

The instructor will guide you step-by-step, dressing alongside you in her own kimono. After the lesson, you’ll also receive a YouTube video link showing the full dressing process for reference.

Optional Combo-Pack (¥4,000 in class)

The following essential accessories are available for purchase (not mandatory, but required to complete dressing):

  • Hadajuban – Undergarment worn under the underkimono
  • Two Koshihimo – Tying strings
  • Erishin – Collar stiffener
  • Korin Belt – Elastic band to secure collar
  • Maeita – Plate to keep the obi straight

Required Items to Have in Advance

You must bring your own:

  • Kimono
  • Obi (半幅帯 / hanhaba-obi)
  • Nagajuban (長襦袢 / underkimono)

If you’re taking the class between June and September, a yukata is recommended due to the hot weather. If wearing a yukata, bring it along with a hanhaba-obi.

Some items may be borrowed upon request after booking (must be returned after the lesson).

You’re encouraged to take photos and videos during the lesson to help you remember the steps afterward.

“I thoroughly enjoyed Saskia’s private kimono lessons. She explains everything clearly and with great respect for tradition. I now know how to properly wear a kimono and the accompanying garments. The follow-up video is a great help, too!”
