Stroll through narrow lanes lined with traditional wooden buildings. Visit Saihoji Temple, an elegant example of Zen Buddhist architecture from the mid-Edo period, and the former Matsusaka residence, a merchant’s home filled with authentic furnishings and historical artifacts.
Continue to the small hut housing the Okakae Jizō Statue, believed to grant wishes. According to legend, if the statue feels lighter than expected when lifted, your wish may come true.
Next, transfer to Tadanoumi Port and take a scenic ferry to Rabbit Island (Ōkunoshima). Upon arrival, your guide will introduce you to the island’s hidden wartime history as a former poison gas production site. Explore ruins scattered along the coastline and gain insights into this lesser-known chapter of Japan’s past.
After the tour segment, enjoy several hours of free time. Feed the hundreds of friendly rabbits roaming the island, soak in a hot spring bath at Kyukamura Ōkunoshima hotel, rent a bicycle, visit the lighthouse, hike to the observation point, or enjoy lunch at the hotel restaurant.
The tour concludes with a return ferry and train ride back to Hiroshima Station, where your guide will assist with final directions and say farewell in front of the Shinkansen gates.
