Full Description

For over a thousand years, kendo has been more than a martial art—it has been a spiritual journey. Practiced by samurai to sharpen both swordsmanship and the mind, it remains one of Japan’s most respected traditions. At Kendo Spirit, we go beyond the typical dojo experience by guiding you through the mental, historical, and technical aspects of real kendo.

What to Expect

You’ll start by changing into authentic kendo attire and receiving a bamboo sword (shinai). Instructors will introduce you to the history of kendo, its origins in the samurai era, and the principles that continue to guide it today.

The Three Core Elements of Kendo

To score a point in kendo, one must master:

  • Ki (Spirit): Harnessing focus, intention, and presence
  • Ken (Sword): Executing precise strikes and thrusts
  • Tai (Body): Applying the correct posture, balance, and footwork

Together, these elements form ki-ken-tai-no-itchi—a moment where spirit, technique, and movement align perfectly.

You’ll learn how to:

  • Perform basic stances, movements, and strikes
  • Understand timing and anticipation in combat
  • Read an opponent’s intent and counter effectively
  • Recognize valid points and techniques in real matches

Your session includes live demonstrations, one-on-one training, and even a friendly sparring session with the instructors to test your skills.

No Experience Necessary

Whether this is your first time hearing the word “kendo” or you’ve always been curious about samurai culture, this experience is designed for all levels. Questions are encouraged, and instructors will adjust to your pace. You’ll walk away with a deep appreciation for both the art and the mindset of Japan’s warrior tradition.
