Contact Jasumo Now →Sayaka Shoji has earned international recognition for her expressive violin playing and careful approach to music. Born in Tokyo and raised in Italy, she made history in 1999 by becoming the youngest winner of the Paganini International Competition at the time. Since then, she has performed with major orchestras around the world. She also plays a 1729 Stradivarius known as the “Recamier.” Her interests extend beyond traditional concert performances, leading to creative projects with artists and architects, including Hiroshi Sugimoto.
Hiroshi Sugimoto brings a completely different artistic perspective to the production. The New York-based artist is known for photography, architecture, stage design, and work connected to traditional Japanese performing arts. His visual style often explores time, space, and perception. For this performance, his stage design creates the visual setting for the music. As a result, the Sayaka Shoji & Hiroshi Sugimoto collaboration becomes more than a standard classical concert.
The program begins with Jean-Féry Rebel’s The Four Elements. Written in 1737, the French Baroque work was strikingly modern for its time. Its unusual harmonies and bold opening immediately create a sense of movement and tension. The programme then turns to Max Richter’s Recomposed by Max Richter: Vivaldi – The Four Seasons. Richter takes Vivaldi’s famous work and reshapes it through a modern minimalist approach. He keeps parts of the original material while creating a new musical structure around it. With Sugimoto’s stage design and Shoji’s violin at the center, the performance connects Baroque tradition with contemporary sound and visual art.
A live performance allows the music, stage design, and atmosphere to work together in a way that recordings cannot fully capture. The presence of Shoji’s violin, Suzuki’s conducting, and Ensemble Genesis creates an engaging musical experience. Meanwhile, Sugimoto’s visual approach adds another layer to the evening. Rohm Theatre Kyoto also provides an impressive setting for this unusual production. For international visitors, this one-night event offers a memorable way to explore Kyoto’s modern cultural scene. The Sayaka Shoji & Hiroshi Sugimoto performance is especially appealing to anyone who enjoys classical music, contemporary art, or creative collaborations.
