Held annually from August 6 to 8, this iconic event radiates artistry, heritage, and joyful community spirit.
Rooted in the early 17th century under Date Masamune, the legendary founder of Sendai, the festival follows the old lunar calendar—celebrating Tanabata in August instead of July 7—to preserve its authentic seasonal magic.
The celebration ignites the night before the main event with a breathtaking fireworks extravaganza along the Hirose River near Nishi Park. Over 16,000 brilliant bursts illuminate the sky, drawing massive crowds. Pro tip: Arrive early to claim a prime spot—this prelude is a must-see!
Central Sendai becomes a living dreamscape as Chūō-dōri, Ichiban-chō, and surrounding arcades are draped in vibrant, handcrafted kusudama and fukinagashi (streamers) suspended from towering bamboo poles.
Each ornament carries deep symbolic meaning:
Local shops, schools, and community groups pour their hearts into these creations, making every corner a work of art.
A beloved tradition: participants keep their designs top secret until the morning of August 6. Throughout the day, judges award gold, silver, and bronze prizes for the most creative and elaborate displays. It’s a joyful showcase of local pride and craftsmanship.
The streets come alive with:
Main Festival Area: Sendai City Center – especially Chūō-dōri and Ichiban-chō shopping arcades near JR Sendai Station
Fireworks (Aug 5): Nishi Park, ~20-min walk from Sendai Station
Completely FREE to enter! Food, games, and premium fireworks seating may have small fees.
The Sendai Tanabata Festival is more than a visual feast—it’s a heartfelt celebration of Japanese folklore, community creativity, and summer joy. Whether you’re writing wishes on tanzaku, savoring street food under glowing decorations, or watching fireworks reflect on the river, this festival creates memories that last a lifetime.
Perfect for couples, families, photographers, and culture lovers—it’s one of Japan’s most photogenic and soulful summer events.
