Each May, the city of Sendai bursts into celebration during the Aoba Festival, one of the region’s oldest and most cherished cultural events. Held over two days on the third weekend of May, this vibrant festival combines centuries of samurai tradition with dazzling performances, music, food, and a joyful spirit that fills the tree-lined avenues of downtown Sendai.

Originally rooted in ceremonies held at Toshogu Shrine, the festival evolved to honor Date Masamune, the powerful feudal lord who founded Sendai. Today, the Aoba Festival is a unique blend of historical tribute and contemporary festivity, drawing locals and travelers alike into its colorful, energetic embrace.

Day 1: Yoi-Matsuri (Evening Festival)

The first day kicks off with the Yoi-Matsuri, a vibrant evening filled with energy and rhythm. All across downtown, the streets come alive with the mesmerizing movements of Suzume Odori, or “Sparrow Dances.” This traditional dance, originally performed by stonemasons who built Aoba Castle in the early 1600s, is characterized by dynamic fan movements, spinning, and jumping — a spectacle powered by taiko drums, flutes, and cymbals.

Thousands of dancers clad in colorful attire fill the streets, their coordinated steps fluttering like sparrows in flight. Visitors can enjoy dance performances, competitions, and a festive atmosphere lit with lanterns and bustling with food stalls, games, and cultural exhibitions.

Day 2: Hon-Matsuri (Main Festival)

On Sunday, the festival steps into its grandest form with the Hon-Matsuri. The main parade transforms the city into a living history book, where ancient traditions are brought to life. The day begins with performances and theatrical swordplay by costumed warriors at Kotodai Park. Soon after, the streets echo with the deep roar of mock gunfire as samurai in full armor march in formation, re-creating the might of the Sendai domain’s past military processions.

Following the warriors are lavish yamaboko floats — majestic, wheeled parade platforms adorned with ornate carvings and mythological figures. Pulled by teams of locals, each float is a moving piece of art, often themed around Japanese folklore, spirituality, or local culture. Some floats carry honored guests or community leaders, adding a sense of civic pride to the celebration.

Alongside the parade, more Sparrow Dancers return to bring joy to the crowd, and the city buzzes with activity in every direction.
