Fuku wa uchi!” (“Evil out! Good luck in!”). Over time, this practice evolved into larger public ceremonies, combining religious tradition with festive community participation.
Ikegami Honmonji Temple has become one of Tokyo’s most famous Setsubun venues. The festival now features elaborate rituals, celebrity participation, and a highly organized event layout, allowing thousands of visitors to safely enjoy the traditional bean-scattering, making it a highlight of the Japanese winter festival calendar.
In 2026, Setsubun at Ikegami Honmonji will be held on Tuesday, February 3, and is free for all visitors. The festival combines spiritual tradition with entertainment, featuring the Tsuinashiki ceremony to drive out evil spirits and the Mamemaki (bean-scattering) ritual, where celebrities, athletes, and local dignitaries throw roasted soybeans to the crowd.
Visitors can expect a lively and immersive experience, with drums, chanting priests, and the bustling atmosphere of families and tourists eagerly collecting beans. The temple grounds, including the five-story pagoda and central courtyard, provide a picturesque and historic setting for this centuries-old ritual.
The festival also includes food vendors offering seasonal treats like amazake, a sweet, warm drink made from sake lees, making it a full sensory experience of taste, sight, and tradition.
