Explore the secret history of Japanese modern art through the lens of Tokyo’s most iconic district. This exhibition, held at the prestigious Sompo Museum of Art, marks the first comprehensive attempt by a local institution to trace the careers of artists inextricably linked to Shinjuku. Covering a transformative half-century, the display follows the evolution of art from the late Meiji period to the contemporary era.

At the turn of the century, Shinjuku became a magnet for emerging talent, creating a unique bohemian ecosystem where artists influenced and drew in one another. The exhibition highlights the works of masters such as Nakamura Tsune and Saeki Yuzo, moving through the mid-century contributions of Matsumoto Shunsuke, and into the avant-garde era of Miyawaki Aiko. This is a rare opportunity to see how a single geographic location fueled the creative explosion of an entire nation.
