Souri Pond was originally constructed in the 8th century as an agricultural reservoir for the surrounding rice fields in Chita Peninsula. In the early 1970s, local residents and the city government began a large-scale planting project, transforming the area into one of Japan’s largest plum groves with 6,000 trees across 25 varieties.

The staggered early, mid, and late-blooming varieties were deliberately chosen to extend the season, making Souri one of the longest-lasting ume viewing spots in central Japan.
Today, the 25-hectare site combines historic water management with modern horticulture, drawing families and photographers to its reflective pond and hillside blossoms.
The Souri Pond Plum Festival 2026 will run from early February to early March, showcasing 6,000 plum trees in 25 varieties around the scenic reservoir. The carefully planned bloom sequence—early whites in February, pinks in mid-season, and late reds into March—ensures continuous color and fragrance for over a month.
Select weekend evenings feature soft illuminations reflecting in the pond, while daytime visitors enjoy walking paths, tea houses, and plum-flavored treats. Entry remains completely free, making it an accessible day trip from Nagoya.
If you’re coming to Japan or already in Japan, Jasumo can arrange custom plum-blossom day trips from Nagoya, private taxis from Nagaura Station, illumination timing, and more. Just contact us using the contact page.
