Overview

The Spring Tour of the Grand Sumo Tournament, known as Jungyo, brings the power and prestige of Japan’s national sport to the Ota Ward General Gymnasium for a special one-day event. Unlike the fixed regional tournaments, the tour offers a more intimate look at the lives of professional rikishi, featuring top-ranked stars from the Makuuchi division. Fans have the rare opportunity to witness not only the intense competitive bouts but also the rigorous morning training sessions that define the discipline of a sumo wrestler.

This cultural spectacle is deeply rooted in Shinto traditions and includes unique performances that are rarely seen during the regular season. Attendees can enjoy the rhythmic drumming of the Yagura-daiko, the humorous Shokkiri comedy sumo matches that demonstrate illegal moves, and the traditional Jinku folk songs. The event serves as a vital bridge between the athletes and the community, offering a family-friendly atmosphere where the history, ritual, and sheer physical force of sumo are on full display.

Why Attend

  • Witness the raw power of top-tier Makuuchi and Juryo wrestlers in a regional setting that allows for a closer and more personal viewing experience than major stadium tournaments.
  • Enjoy exclusive tour-only performances including the Shokkiri comedy sumo and the soul-stirring Sumo Jinku folk songs performed by the wrestlers themselves.
  • Observe the morning practice sessions (Keiko) starting from 09:00, providing a unique behind-the-scenes look at the extreme physical conditioning and technique required for the sport.
  • Take home a piece of history with tickets that include commemorative cushions, allowing you to experience the traditional floor seating style used for centuries in Japanese arenas.

Faqs

What is the difference between Tamari seats and standard chair seating?

Tamari seats are premium ringside floor cushions located closest to the dohyo where you can feel the intensity of the wrestlers’ impacts. Standard chair seats are located in the upper tiers of the gymnasium and provide a more conventional stadium-style viewing experience with a broader view of the arena.

Are there any specific age restrictions for the ringside Tamari S seats?

Preschool children are strictly not allowed to sit in Tamari S seats because of the physical risk of a sumo wrestler falling out of the ring during a match. Families with younger children are encouraged to book chair seats or the Hina altar sections where it is safer to watch the bouts.

What items are included in the optional Bento set voucher?

The Bento set voucher provides a traditional Japanese lunch box, a bottle of tea, and an official event pamphlet that details the day’s program and participating wrestlers. Please remember that you must have a separate admission ticket to enter the venue as the voucher alone does not grant entry.

Do I need to bring anything specific if I am sitting on the first floor?

Visitors with tickets for the first-floor seating areas are required to remove their shoes and should bring their own slippers as walking with outside footwear is prohibited. The gymnasium also sells slippers on-site for those who forget to bring them, while the second-floor seats allow for regular footwear.

Can I get a refund if I am unable to attend the tournament after purchasing?

Once tickets for the Grand Sumo Tournament are purchased through official channels, they are non-refundable and cannot be exchanged for different dates or seat types. It is important to confirm your travel schedule and availability before submitting your final request through the concierge service.
