Goryokaku is a star-shaped fortress built in the late Edo Period (1600–1868) as part of Japan’s defensive measures against potential foreign incursions. Its unique pentagonal design was inspired by Western military architecture and remains one of the most historically significant fortresses in Japan. Over the years, Goryokaku has become not just a historical site but also a cultural symbol of Hakodate.

Originally small in scale, the light displays have grown in complexity and beauty, creating a magical winter experience for visitors from all over Japan and the world.
Today, the Star Illumination, known locally as Hoshi no Yume, is a beloved winter event where thousands of lights transform the fortress’s moat into a glittering spectacle. The combination of history, architecture, and seasonal beauty makes it a must-visit for both locals and tourists.
The 2025-2026 Star Illumination of Goryokaku will run from early December through late February, lighting up each evening from sunset until 7:00 PM. Around 5,000 lights are strung along the fortress’s star-shaped perimeter, creating a breathtaking glow against the snowy backdrop. Visitors can stroll along the paths surrounding the moat to fully enjoy the display.
The event is perfect for evening walks, romantic outings, and photography enthusiasts. For the best view of the star shape, visitors can head to the Goryokaku Tower Observation Deck, which provides a panoramic perspective of the illuminated fortress. The combination of historical architecture and seasonal ambiance offers an unforgettable winter experience.
