Full Description

Step into a peaceful world of Japanese brush art with this sumi ink and calligraphy experience in Kyoto. Ideal for beginners and culture lovers, this workshop introduces the traditional practice of using handmade sumi ink and brush techniques to paint bamboo and write Japanese characters.

Your experience begins with grinding sumi ink on an inkstone (suzuri)—a slow, fragrant, and mindful process that connects you with centuries of Japanese artistic heritage. You’ll be guided through each step while appreciating the texture and aroma of fresh ink.

You will then practice key brush techniques:

  • Soku-hitsu: brush on its side, for bold, expressive strokes
  • Choku-hitsu: upright brush position, for precision and grace

After refining your skills, you’ll move on to drawing bamboo on a shikisi board, followed by adding kanji characters like “竹” (bamboo) or “和” (harmony). You may also request other characters, and the instructor will assist with proper form and meaning.

The session ends with your own beautiful artwork—a lasting reminder of your cultural journey in Kyoto. Your finished piece is ready to take home, frame, or gift.
